Whetstone High School's Environmental and Technology Education Center (WHETEC) utilizes the ecosystem habitats of The Whetstone Park of Roses to link technology with the outdoors through a interdisciplinary high school curriculum. This unique program allows for students to develop a comprehensive knowledge and appreciation for the environment while building critical 21st century job skills.
The following lessons and activities have been designed for use through the WHETEC Program at Whetstone High School in Columbus, Ohio. However, these activities may be adapted for use in a variety of classroom settings and focus on application of environmental knowledge to real-world settings. Environmental Education contains both scientific and sociological perspectives, vital to comprehending the impact human society and technology makes on the Earth and how decisions are made that alter this impact.
The City of Whetpebble: Home Sweet Home lessons attempt to bring a small number of environmental issues to a personal level. The activity consists of a collection of scenarios in which students must make decisions concerning the fictional city's environment. It engages students in a lively simulation of city government.
The Whetpebble lessons were developed by Paula M. Konfal, Denison University in collaboration with John B. Hopper, Whetstone High School.
